HI.

I’m a journalist and the author of several books. My first, “Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep,” was a New York Times bestseller, picked for Barnes and Noble’s Discover Great New Writers program, and called one of the best books of the month by Amazon. My second book, “The King and Queen of Malibu: The True Story of the Battle for Paradise,” was a Los Angeles Times bestseller and named one of the best non-fiction books of the year by Amazon. My third book, “Black Death at the Golden Gate: The Race to Save America from the Bubonic Plague,” was an IndieBound bestseller and is the basis for a documentary on PBS. My fourth book, “The Monster’s Bones,” was named the year’s best biography by the American Society of Journalists and Authors, named a Kansas Notable Book, and chosen as a part of the Texas Topaz Reading list by the Texas Library Association. I am now working on “Into Unknown Skies,” which will be published by Mariner/HarperCollins in September, 2024.

Along the way, I’ve appeared on MSNBC, Fox, and morning TV shows; written stories for the New York Times on topics ranging from unicycles to military funerals; contributed articles to the Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times among others; joined numerous national and local NPR shows as a guest; given two talks featured on CSPAN’s Book TV; appeared at the Southern Festival of Books and the Tucson Festival of Books, among others; and taught undergraduate courses at New York University.

I have also served as a speaker at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, and given guest lectures at companies and organizations large and small.
